FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

The things people usually ask before getting started. If your question isn't here, ask it on the free call — you'll get a straight answer.

Getting started

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes. Book a free 15-minute call at a time that works for you, or send a question first if you'd rather.

Is the 15-minute call really free?

Yes. It costs nothing and doesn't commit you to anything. It's a chance to talk through what you need and see whether the firm is a good fit. General information shared on the call isn't tax advice for your situation — that starts once we've both signed an engagement letter.

What does it cost?

Starting prices for each service are on the Services page, along with what moves the price — like the number of rental properties or how many accounts we're reconciling. After a short conversation you'll get a price in writing, and the fee is set out in your engagement letter before any work begins, so you know the cost up front. Most engagements are quoted as a flat fee. If something new comes up after we start, the price only changes with your written OK.

How do we get started?

Book a free call and we'll talk through what you need. If it's a fit, you'll get an engagement letter that spells out the scope, the fee, and what we each need to do. Work begins once that's signed, and you'll get a checklist of what to send.

Working together

What do you need from me to prepare my return?

For individuals, that's generally your prior-year return, income forms (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s), and records for any deductions or credits you're claiming. For businesses, we'll also need books for the year and details on any major purchases or changes in ownership. You'll get a specific checklist once we've talked — we'd rather ask than have you guess.

How do I send you documents securely?

Not by email, and not through the contact form on this site. Regular email isn't secure enough for Social Security numbers, account numbers, or tax documents. Once we're working together, we'll arrange a secure way to send and receive anything sensitive, and we'll tell you exactly how before you send anything.

Will I be working with you or with staff?

With Jon. The firm is intentionally solo right now, so the person you talk to is the person doing the work.

My records are a mess. Is that a problem?

It's more common than you'd think, and there's no judgment here. Tell us where things stand on the free call. If the books need organizing before a return can be prepared, that's scoped and priced in writing before the work starts. If we find more than expected once we're in the records, we'll tell you before doing anything that changes the price.

Can't I just use tax software?

For a simple return, plenty of people do fine with software. A CPA tends to help most when something changes — a new business, a rental property, a K-1, a move — or when you'd rather hand it to someone who'll explain it. The free call is a good way to find out which camp you're in.

Do you help with tax planning?

Yes. Tax planning means looking ahead instead of only back — for example, estimating what you'll owe and setting quarterly payments, thinking through a big change (a new business, a rental, a new job, a move) before it happens, or a year-end check-in for business owners. It's available alongside your return or bookkeeping, and like everything else, the scope and price are set out in writing before any work begins. Planning reflects the law and your facts at the time it's done.

Deadlines & scope

When are tax returns due?

In a typical year, federal S corporation and partnership returns are due in mid-March, and federal individual returns in mid-April. Virginia is different: Virginia individual returns are generally due May 1, and Virginia pass-through entity returns in mid-April. Dates shift when they land on a weekend or holiday, and your situation may differ — see the deadlines page, and we'll go over the deadlines that apply to you when we start working together.

Can you file an extension for me?

Yes. It's worth knowing that an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any tax owed is still due on the original deadline, and interest and penalties run from that date. If we're extending your return, we'll help you estimate what to pay with the extension based on the information you've given us.

Do you handle payroll or sales tax?

Not at the moment. Payroll processing and filings and sales and use tax are outside our current scope, along with C corporation, trust and estate, and nonprofit returns. We'd rather do a focused set of services well and point you to someone good for the rest.

Do you work with clients outside Virginia?

The firm is Virginia-licensed and focused on clients here in Hampton Roads and across Virginia. If you've moved, work across state lines, or have income in another state, mention it when you reach out and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.

These answers are general information, not tax or accounting advice for your specific situation. What applies to you depends on your facts, which we'd go through together.
